OK, where do we begin? We might be small, but our program is HUGE!! You will not believe everything we do at Camp Arrowhead, with a selection of activities to challenge and delight every boy, from the very active to the highly creative. Now take a deep breath, and try to say all of this in one breath: We offer water-skiing, archery, soccer, blacksmithing (an activity unique to Camp Arrowhead), swimming, camping, fly-fishing, horseback riding, lacrosse, crafts, kayaking/paddling, basketball, zip-lining, woodworking, hiking, riflery, high ropes, spin fishing, mountain biking, ceramics, karate, canoeing, rock climbing, rocketry, golf, wakeboarding, sailing, Indian lore, blobbing, friendly tribe competitions, and the Camp Arrowhead Racing Team (we are the only camp in the nation with this program)!! All of our activities are taught with a focus on three goals: safety, skills and fun. Safety is a huge focus for us at Arrowhead - nothing else can happen without it. As a result, a huge portion of our 8-day orientation focuses on safety procedures, safety skills and an ongoing awareness of safety. Skills are also important. Our counselors are selected not only for their exceptional attitudes and their commitment to our mission, but also for their knowledge of specific areas. For example, our blacksmithing program is run by a professional craftsman who has been working with metal for over 20 years. Our ski instructor has competed professionally and has taught skiing and wakeboarding for over a dozen years. In the same way, we find die-hard anglers to teach fly-fishing (including tying their own flies), accomplished paddlers for kayaking and individuals trained at NOLS for climbing and hiking. We encourage our campers to improve their skills through our system of progressions. A boy earns his first of five progressions (Woodsman) by learning basic information about an activity (like safety and terminology). Progressions continue to challenge the camper through 5 levels, the final of which (Guide) means that the camper is ready to teach the activity to others. Finally, every activity must be fun. If it is not, we go back to the drawing board. We, however, have some secret weapons - our staff members! From our first year counselors to a crazy Australian police officer who treks to camp each summer to our directors, we have a team that has a boy's heart for fun. For example, last summer, we decided to do something outrageous - create a race team. We started with a car in a field of weeds. We stripped it, worked on it, secured sponsors (every race car needs sponsors), painted it and raced it in less than a month. Everyone had a great time. I wonder what this summer will bring?
