COLLIER COUNTY - Scientists are blaming recent storms for a massive fish kill - thousands dead - at Lake Trafford in Collier County. The Southwest Florida recreation hotspot is the biggest freshwater lake south of Okeechobee.

Scientists believe last week's storms killed an algae bloom in the 1,500-acre lake, causing a chain reaction that sucked the oxygen from the water.

People who live and work near the lake say the result was the worst fish kill in nearly 10 years.

Lake Trafford resident Annie Olesky estimates the death toll at 50,000 - and more keep coming.

"dodgey, blue spotted, catfish and tilapia," she said.

Olesky runs the marina at the lake and says they expect to take a financial hit.

"To the point where you just want to sit down and cry," Olesky said.

Scientists testing the water Thursday think the worst isn't over yet - the field of fish on the surface is just a fraction of what's beneath.

"Over the next few days, as the fish decompose, they'll start to pop up," said Jon Fury of the Florida Fish & Wildlife Commission.

Experts don't hold out much hope for the fish still trying to stay alive, gasping for air, because the oxygen in the lake is depleted.

Officials were forced to close Lake Trafford Park and ban fishing because some people were taking the dead fish off the surface of the water to eat or sell.

Because they died as a result of an algae bloom, aesthetically the dead fish don't look bad - but experts say eating them is a very bad idea.

Lake Trafford suffers from eight feet of muck or decomposing plant material on the bottom, and is on a list to be dredged.

Local lawmakers hope the state will fund the $24 million project this summer. They believe it will help stop big fish kills like this.

Flood, have no fear! Mold and I jsut got off the phone with the FL Fish and Wildlife office. It just so happens that Adam and I have been developing a fish breathing apperatius, and It should work nicely here. The only problem is that they told me that YOU were down there with a net trying to snag a reccord Breaking bass.....

sorry to hear that Kev, I'm sad that your sad but nature does have an amazing way of getting through things like this and it will be fine im sure. Stay away from them fishies for now tho mate!
