What do you look for in hiring staff and cabin counselors?

Our counselors are the heart of Camp Arrowhead, and parents often judge camp by the quality of our summer staff. When a child leaves the familiar surroundings of home to go to a boys summer camp, counselors serve as surrogate parents, older siblings and friends. Hiring top notch, quality staff is our HIGHEST PRIORITY.

We have high standards, and we talk to many college students each year from campuses across the nation (with some internationals tossed in for good measure). Following an extensive application, rigorous face-to-face interviews, background and reference checks, we choose a fraction of our applicants as summer camp staff. We have a great retention rate among returning staff, and campers often mature into excellent counselors who already have the knowledge of and a heart for Arrowhead.

We have high expectations for our summer staff. Some of the qualities we are looking for are spiritual and emotional maturity, mentoring attitudes, creativity, and a good sense of humor. Above all, we hire counselors that display servant hearts and desire to be committed to the Camp Arrowhead mission. We also provide extensive training for our staff including a week long orientation followed by specific activity trainings.

What if my son gets homesick while attending camp?

Some Arrowhead campers will experience homesickness during their stay at camp and our staff is trained in how to properly address and help the camper adjust to Arrowhead life quickly. The solution to homesickness starts well before arrival at camp and you can help your son adjust to life away from home in a few simple ways. 1) Begin talking to your son about Arrowhead and actively involve him in the decision to attend camp. 2) Visit Arrowhead during the off season and allow your son to meet the directors. 3) Allow your son to decide on what to bring to camp and to actively help pack for camp life. 4) Attend Family Camp to acquaint your son to the campus, staff and living in a cabin.

Will the medical staff contact me if my son gets sick at camp?

Our Infirmary, Wounded Knee, is well equipped and staffed by one or more nurses throughout the summer sessions. For scrapes and bruises, that are common at a high adventure camp for boys, you will generally not be notified. But, if your son requires attention by a doctor or stays overnight in Wounded Knee you will receive a call. In addition to our on site nurses we require that each summer staff member be certified in CPR, First Aid and for adventure trip staff each must be Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder certified.

My son needs medication while at camp. Can I send his medication with him?

Yes. Our medical staff meets with you on opening day to receive all medications and then doses the medications each day as needed. ALL medications including over the counter drugs and vitamins, are kept in the Infirmary under lock and key.

How many campers can attend Camp Arrowhead?

We strive to make Arrowhead a community of brothers where everyone works together to make Arrowhead a better home. We limit our enrollment to 132 campers each session. We are small in size allowing for individual attention for each camper but large in acreage with over 200 acres to explore and play.

How many campers and counselors live in a cabin?

Six to eight campers live in a cabin with two or sometimes three cabin counselors. Typically we house three cabin counselors with the youngest campers.

What does a day at camp look like for a camper?

Days at Arrowhead are jam packed with fun and skills acquisition. With off campus trips, special events, and Arrowhead Adventures (themed days), there’s always something happening around camp. Whether it is a daily program like blacksmithing or a pop-up activity such as blackberry pie-making in the kitchen, we are very creative with our programs.

How do campers sign up for activities?

Camp Arrowhead is a Christian, high adventure summer camp offering both traditional camp activities and specialized high adventure programming to fit every boy’s desire for adventure. Every Sunday afternoon campers choose five activities for a Monday, Wednesday, Friday and a Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday block of programming. This allows for up to ten activities per week, not to mention the various off campus adventure trips offered each week! Our program staff ensures that each boy is given a balance of his choices and that his horizons are expanded between adventure, traditional and art programming.

Camp Arrowhead is known for its amazing trip programs. Campers are able to choose from a variety of out of camp wilderness adventure trips from single day trips to eight-day trips (Spearhead Adventure Trips). Adventure trips are offered to all skill levels from beginner to advanced campers.
